On
the northern edge of the Wollongong council boundary & East of
the
F6 freeway, Helensburgh is a historic town high on a sandstone
plateau overlooking the iconic Royal National Park and Sydney's
Woronora drinking water catchment.
The
lease for the controversial Helensburgh
land fill tip in Nixon Place off Halls Road expires in 2013 -
and Wollongong
City Council intends to simply change the landfill disposal
to one of a 'Waste Transfer Station' - meaning rubbish will
now be dumped in large skip bins on the same site to be later
transfered to
Whytes Gully Depot Helensburgh's tip is the only
one too between Sutherland Shire's Menai tip and Wollongong' s Port
Kembla, and though a 'dry' tip is subject to loads of
demolition and excavation waste.
So,
northern Helensburgh residents will still be subject to heavy
traffic of trucks and trailers down Parkes St and Halls Rd,
and the surrounding Hacking River water catchment that flows directly
to the Royal National Park still at great
risk of polluted run off.
Hundreds of
people signed The Halls Road Action Group's petition against the new
WTS, but they need more help. Our
best way to
steer Wollongong City Council into a new 'tip' site, is for
our community and
regular users of the Tip to provide a list of alternative locations or
solutions.
The
proposed Waste Transfer Station requires about
* 1.5ha of land
(15,000sqm)
* Ideally away
from residential streets, wide and easy access
* Positioned to
service users from Waterfall to Wollongong (needn't be in
Helensburgh)
* Not positioned
in environmentally sensitive locations that will
threaten either the Woronora drinking water catchment nor the Hacking
River water catchment, nor the precious Royal National Park &
SCAs
* Able to
accept household refuse, recycling and possibly garden
waste
Do you have an idea
for a new location for the proposed
waste site or better method ? You may even own or
know of a suitable vacant 1.5ha lot.

suggestion please fill in the form below. All
ideas will be collated & submitted to Wollongong City Council,
but
if you do not wish your personal details also given please state so in
your entry.
